Unleavened Bread is simple to make and takes a handful of ingredients. There is no leavening agent — no baking soda, baking powder or yeast — in this bread, which makes it chewy and slightly tougher than a traditional flatbread. It is a great bread to make when you run out of leavening agents and need a bread of sorts to go with a meal.
After it was baked, we brushed it with butter and sprinkled it with a bit of garlic powder. It’s delicious this way or plain and we actually quite enjoyed it!
It’s Easter and Holy Week. We have been doing activities each day of the week that coincides with our Bible passages. Today is Maundy Thursday, so we made unleavened bread to help us remember Jesus and The Last Supper. I share more about Unleavened Bread in my Easter Week post you can find here.
Let’s get started!
Beat butter, egg yolks, salt and oil together.
Alternate flour and milk until all is incorporated. Dough should be crumbly, but moist.
Toss dough onto floured surface.
Lightly knead dough until it comes together.
Divide dough into 4 to 6 pieces. We just divided the dough into 4, but I think smaller pieces would be better. Roll as thin as you are able to.
Here is our unleavened bread rolled out. Roll all pieces of dough out.
Place on baking sheet.
Bake at 400F for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly golden. I decided to bake at 350F for 20 minutes which may have yielded a slightly tougher unleavened bread so I do recommend cooking at a higher temperature.
We enjoyed the unleavened bread with hearty lentil cabbage roll soup.
