Sloppy Joes go by a few different names including chopped meat sandwich, loose meat sandwich, dynamites plus so much more! These yummy sandwiches are typically made with ground meat and tomato sauce. I changed it up a bit and use ketchup instead and use either ground meat or lentils and I often add veggies like onion and carrot to my version.
There’s a few different theories where this particular sandwich originated from. In 1930, a cook named Joe added some tomato sauce to loose meat and created this “Sloppy Joe” from Iowa. There’s another version of this sandwich dating back to 1917 in Cuba. And yet another version in Florida, 1933 when this sandwich was served at Sloppy Joe’s Bar on the day Prohibition was repealed. Manwich was released in 1969 as a way quick way for someone to make a Sloppy Joe.
Making these sandwiches with ground meat or even lentils is another way to stretch a few ingredients into a meal to feed a hungry family!
Let’s get started!
Saute onion and carrot. Season with salt and pepper. Add a splash of oil and water to the pan.

Add bbq seasoning.

Add water and cook until onion is tender.

Add ground beef. Add a sprinkle more salt and pepper.

Cook until beef is no longer pink, and cooked through.

Add ketchup, water and more bbq seasoning. I use a smoky applewood bbq seasoning.

Smells delicious!! You can add bell peppers if you like or other veggies like shredded zucchini or even mushrooms. We like it a bit more plain!

Serve on toasted buns. I always serve salad with sloppy joes!

Top with shredded cheese if you like. I added tomatoes to my salad. You can top with a bun, or serve open-faced like we do.
