It is easy to make your own quick to sew pot holders!! We love different sewing projects that are easy, especially since we are sewing-beginners! These pot holders took me less than an hour to make, and probably took me more time to decide what fabric I wanted to use than to sew the pot holders!
First, we need to cut fabric, batting and Insul-Bright. Insul-Bright is a heat-resistant material that allows you to pick up hot foods from the oven with the pot holder or oven mitt. It is not heat proof so there is still the potential to be burned, so handle with care. If you find it gets too warm through the pot holder, add an extra layer of Insul-Bright or batting.
I cut my fabric at 9.5″ square. I chose 2 different fall time fabrics that had a Thanksgiving feel to them! I also attached a loop but this is totally optional — I probably would not attach the loop next time since I just keep the pot holders in the drawer!
Once you have all your fabrics cut and ready to go, it is time to assemble it all to sew. Since we will be flipping it, the good end of the loop will be in the centre and it will be good side to good side. The way we assemble it seems odd, but will be correct once flipped.
This is what the loop looks like — the good loop end inside.
The layers will be the fabrics, good side to good side and Insul-Bright, shiny side up and another layer shiny side down. If you would like extra padding, place a layer of batting in between the Insul-Bright. I did not use batting in this pot holder.
This is how all the layers look again — as you can see, it is fabric (good side down) then the other fabric (good side up), 2 layers of Insul-Bright with the shiny sides outward. Next, it is time to sew.
Sew all the way around, about 1/4″ from the edge, leaving an opening to flip. Trim any excess fabric. Here is one side.
And here is the other side sewn. I left a piece in the middle bottom not sewn so I could flip. I made sure to sew around the corner before leaving a space so it would be much easier to sew, and the corner stays nice and round.
Once flipped, turn edge in and pin.
Here is what the pot holder looks like, pinned and ready to sew.
Sew all the way around the pot holder. You can use a nicer stitch if you like.
Both sides of the pot holder after sewing around the edge. You can also sew in the middle, corner to corner which helps give the potholder some shape and makes it easier to fold and grab baking pans.
I decided to sew from corner to corner on an angle which makes it much easier to grab onto pans and keeps it flat.
The pot holders are now ready to use. It makes a lovely gift idea! Perfect to take to Thanksgiving dinner with a pie or as a Christmas gift from your kids or even as a Mother’s Day gift! You can personalize one side by using a plain cotton fabric and get the kids to decorate it or even stamp their handprint on it. The options are endless! And with an array of fabrics out there, you really can create anything!
It also makes a great mug rug to enjoy your hot chocolate, coffee or tea on and has enough space for a couple cookies or treats to enjoy!
We’d love to see your creations! Post in the comments with your name and we may feature your creation in a future post.
