Painting rocks is a fun way to spruce up the garden, create a rock garden, as garden markers or spread joy and positivity throughout the neighborhood. We decided to paint rocks and hide them in our fellow gardeners’ plots at the community garden. And everyone enjoyed them!
We chose to paint fun things like jokes and puns on the rocks — things we could think of to bring a smile to someone’s face, but you really can paint anything you like!
First, we always wash the rocks and let them air dry.
Then paint a layer of white paint. This will help other colors to pop. You may need a couple layers of white – be sure to allow to dry completely between coats. Some rocks will absorb more paint than others.
Paint other colors on top. I chose a couple shades of blue for this rock.
Then paint your design on top. You can also lightly sketch your drawing on with a pencil before painting. We are using acrylics to paint with and then we will seal the rocks to withstand the weather. We love puns and punny sayings and jokes, so that is what we chose to do! They were so much fun to make!!
We wrote on the rocks with Sharpie which actually worked quite well.
My daughter had fun with this rock!
Here are a few of the other rocks my daughters made.
Here are a bunch more. We chose to do a few sayings or jokes and repeat several because we enjoyed them so much.
A couple rocks that we hid in the gardens. We went in the late evening, so it was quite dark and I had trouble taking photos since it was so dark out.
We will be painting more and hiding them in our garden and around the neighborhood. We will share other rocks we decorate! Painting rocks is really a lot of fun!
We would love to see your rock creations! Feel free to share them with us in the comments below!
enjoy from Our City Homestead to yours
