Here is the progress on our city garden! We have two garden plots in our local community garden – one large and one small. We try our best to stay on top of the weeds and weed it weekly. Some days have been quite wet which is a relief in that we did not have to water much, but there have been plenty of hot muggy days in which we needed to water our garden. The lack of water makes the squash, zucchini and lettuce bitter but unfortunately, too wet and vegetables like onions begin to rot.
The dill is enjoying our hot days and all the rain! It’s growing great and is delicious on fresh garden potatoes and great in soup and salad. I also dry dill and chop fresh dill to freeze so we can enjoy throughout the cold winter months.
The carrots are growing fabulously! They are not ready to eat quite yet but patience will reap a delicious harvest!
The green and yellow beans are flowering and some are still sprouting.
The potatoes continue to flower. They take about 60 to 90 days from planting to begin to yield “new” potatoes. Once the potatoes flower, generally there are potatoes ready to be picked! I often wait until they are nearly done flowering before I begin to search for potatoes!
The zucchini are flowering and small zucchini are already growing! I usually like zucchini a bit bigger, but sometimes when we want to saute zucchini, we like it small like the one we picked here, because small zucchini are much more tender and the peel tastes much better compared to when they are super large.
We had the most beautiful onions until one day they started to brown. We thought perhaps the onions were too wet from all the rain we had. When we pulled the onion from the ground, not only did they smell awful, but they were mushy and full of worms! We decided to just toss them in the local organics/compost pile!!
As I mentioned earlier that when potatoes flower, they are generally ready to pick. I always wait a few weeks before digging! We decided to take a look and what to our eyes shall appear but eight beautiful red potatoes!
Garden fresh vegetables always taste great and are such a reward for the summer’s hard work! We will keep you updated on how our garden grows!
