Homemade crackers are actually quite simple to make and only take a few simple ingredients.
Typically, crackers are made with flour, herbs and seasonings and are docked with holes to prevent the crackers from bubbling up or rising creating air pockets. Crackers were first made in 1792 as a variation of sailors biscuits or hardtack because they did not spoil as quickly and were re-invented in the early 1800’s. Crackers got their name from the crackling noise the dough made in the brick oven. Nabisco (a popular cracker company) formed in 1898 and developed several crackers that became more popular in the 1930’s, and of course other companies followed suit.
This recipe uses whole wheat flour and is the only way I have ever made them. I like the whole grain flavor and it is easy to switch up the taste by changing the seasonings.
Let’s get started!
Combine flour, flax seeds, sesame seeds and seasonings together. You can use any seasoning you like. I like using onion seasoning or pizza seasoning or everything bagel seasoning which I am using today. Add oil and water and mix until combined. Turn onto floured surface and flour dough. Roll thinly. I put the dough on a cutting mat so it would be easy to work with.
Cut into cracker-size pieces or any shape you like. I just sliced the dough with a knife into random pieces. Place on a baking sheet. Bake at 375F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet and place on cooling racks to cool completely. The crackers will crisp up as they cool.
These crackers are so flavorful and are great with hot or cold dips — perfect for any appetizer night! They are also delicious with homemade corn relish or pickles! Here’s the recipe for my best ever corn relish!
This is my favorite cracker recipe and is simple to make. You can change up the flavor by adding different seeds or nuts and different seasonings. So delicious!
