Nothing beats homemade hot cocoa in the winter to warm the soul! It is nice to enjoy a mug of yummy hot chocolate after being outside in the snow and cold, crisp winds, especially after shoveling! And making homemade hot cocoa is quite simple, and only takes 4 ingredients!
Drinking hot chocolate dates back a couple thousand years ago. It was often considered a medicinal drink. The history of hot chocolate is quite interesting and you can read all about it here The History of Drinking Chocolate.
Let’s get started!
Combine milk, sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla in a saucepan on medium heat. Whisk until cocoa melts into the milk and sugar dissolves.
Heat until warm, but do not boil or milk may curdle.
Once warm, ladle into mugs. Drink as is or top with marshmallows and chocolate drizzle or whipped cream and any of your favorite hot chocolate toppings. Refrigerate any leftovers. It’s simple to reheat or tastes great cold. Stir before drinking.
If you find it too strong with cocoa, you can easily add more milk or hot water. You can also pour half coffee and half hot cocoa for a yummy cafe mocha!
