We decided to have taco beef but didn’t have any tortillas on hand, so instead of running to the grocery store (thank goodness for no-grocery shopping October!), we made some flour tortillas and they were amazingly delicious!
The tortillas were soft, pliable and oh so good! No fillers, no preservatives, no emulsifiers, no l-cysteine (derived from chicken/duck feathers or hair which keeps breads pliable), or anything gross in them… just simple ingredients! And that’s what we want to focus more on is good simple ingredients! After having these, I think I’ll always make flour tortillas!! We often make corn tortillas but this is the first time making flour tortillas and these will be something I’ll make often!
Rolling the flour tortillas thin is a little tough, so I suggest a good heavy rolling pin or a flour tortilla press! They’re easy to make but does take a bit of time when cooking without a griddle.
Let’s get started!
In a bowl, add flour, salt and baking powder.
Add oil, lard or butter and hot water. Stir.
It will seem quite dry. Lightly knead.
It’ll come into a dough ball after a bit of kneading.
Cut into about 16 pieces. I cut it into 14 pieces.
Toss in frying pan or griddle for a couple minutes.
Flip and cook until golden, about 2 minutes more.
As you cook them, place on a tea towel on a baking tray and cover it with the other half of the tea towel. This will help keep them pliable.
Continue to cook and toss them under the tea towel until the tortillas are done. This also helps keep them warm.
Serve with your favorite meal. I served them with taco beef. So yummy!
