If you are a chocolate lover, you’ll love these yummy fudgy brownies! These delectable brownies are fudgy, filled with chocolate chips, moist, a bit gooey and chewy with crispy edges. They are so delicious!!
Perhaps I would cook them 5 minutes less next time since the edges were a bit crispy, but they were still gooey in the middle, even though the photos do not quite depict that.
These brownies would be great with frosting and ice cream or by changing up the flavors like using orange extract instead of vanilla or adding mint chocolate chips. They’re versatile and would be great for any holiday by changing the flavors or cutting into fun shapes!
Brownies have an interesting history. They were first made in 1893 when a prominent socialite, whose husband owned Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, asked the pastry chef for a dessert smaller than a piece of cake and easy to eat from a packed lunch. I feel like the brownie definitely falls into that request! This brownie contained nuts and an apricot glaze. Fannie Farmer, a popular cookbook author of the time first published a recipe for a brownie in 1896 which actually contained molasses but no chocolate. I’ll definitely be trying that recipe because I love molasses!! Chocolate Brownie recipes began to appear in cookbooks in the early 1900’s after a housewife in Maine created the original chocolate brownie and published it in 1907. Even though cocoa powder was around since 1828, these old fashioned, original brownie recipes contained baker’s chocolate rather than cocoa powder even though cocoa powder has a much more concentrated flavor, less sugar and less fat making cocoa powder easier to bake with. Today, I’m using cocoa powder in our brownies!
Let’s get started!
Melt butter and add cocoa powder.
Mix until creamy and all the cocoa powder lumps are gone.
Add sugar, vanilla and eggs.
Mix well. Add salt, flour and baking powder. Mix well. Batter will be quite thick.
Add your favorite mix-ins like nuts or chocolate chips. we are using semisweet chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips.
Stir gently. Pour batter into a 9×13” pan.
Bake at 350F for 20 to 25 minutes or until done. Let cool completely before slicing.
So yummy!
And it makes a great dessert! We served the brownie with a lazy chocolate “mousse” which essentially was pudding and whipped cream mixed together, and finished with a little drizzle of chocolate sauce which was simply amazing! Went so good together!
