I love sprucing up areas around my home with homemade signs. It adds a little personal touch to the space and creates a more homey feel. I especially like to dress up my coffee and tea nook. In amongst my coffee pods you will find a mini coffee sign, not to mention the sign in my tiered tray in amongst the coffee syrups, sugars, flavored creams and other goodies that are essential in our house! We love the old country feel so we mix that around our modern-style home decor.
It is super easy to create this sign and within a few hours, you have a lovely sign for your coffee area or even as a gift that can be done in any of your favorite colors and on any surface!
This coffee sign adds a little humor to the kitchen, which I love! A Day Without Coffee is Like… just kidding, I have no idea! I think that’s about right for any coffee lover!
Let’s get started!
First off, we need to paint our board. I like using white acrylic paint and I do about 3 coats of paint.
Once the paint has dried, dry brush with grey or dark brown. To dry brush, put a bit of paint on the brush, dab some paint off and then brush along the surface of the board, around the edges and some through the middle. If you get spots that feel like they are too blotchy, brush a little white acrylic on.
Seal the board. This will help the transfer to be removed a bit easier from the surface. I use mod podge. Let dry for a few hours.
Time to chalk!! First off, fuzz the transfer. I use the fuzzing cloth, but any towel will work fine, as long as it does not leave a lot of lint behind. Fuzzing the transfer helps to remove some of the stickiness.
Next, line up the transfer on the board. We are using 3 parts of the transfer so we will do it piece by piece. We will start with the “A day without coffee is like…”
I am combining the colors Bark and Shimmer Copper to create a “hot mess” look. When I combine colors, I do not put the excess chalk into the same container – I actually have a “junk” container that I put all of my mixed colors into.
Next, we will do the “just kidding, I have no idea” part of the transfer. I love how sparkly the Shimmer Copper is!
Last, we will do the coffee cup. I always do the coffee one color and the coffee cup another color which can be tricky, so the multipurpose tool works fantastic for this!
I am using the color Bark for the coffee color and Pistachio for the cup color.
And now our board is complete. Wash the transfers and tools and set them to dry, sticky side up.
We will add some jute to finish the board, but you can use ribbon if you like. I just wrap it around a few times and tie a knot in the back, or sometimes I tie a bow in the front. It is completely up to you. I do not glue the jute that way I can remove it if I so choose.
And voila! Here is our beautiful board!
You can use any size or style of board that the transfer will fit onto like my 6×6″ board or the 5×7″ board.
The options on how to use this transfer design really is endless! You can also combine other transfers with this one or even use an etching cream for glass to etch this design in or you can even ink it onto a shirt! You can apply it to an array of surfaces using a variety of colors to create a piece that is unique to you!
