It is nearly Easter, so what better way to celebrate than to do some fun crafts! I love terracotta clay pots and always have a few plain ones on hand for creating fun things with! There are just so many different crafts you can do with terracotta, like today’s Easter Clay Pots!!
Since we had a few extra clay pots that were just waiting to be created into something cute, we decided to create two different bunny clay pot crafts! We created two styles of bunnies to both hold plants or chocolates as well as flipping them upside down to simply be decorative.
Grab the family because kids of all ages love to create something fun (especially if there might be a few treats to be had) and the few supplies that are required and let’s get started!
All you need is a terracotta clay pot (or 2 or 3!), as well as the saucer the pot sits in, paint, mod podge, wire or pipe cleaner, fabric or felt, yarn or strands of burlap and embellishments.
Bunny Pot Craft One – Plant or Candy Bowl!
We used scrap fabric we had from a jelly roll blanket to cut the ears. They are cut from a 2″ strip of material and 4 are cut per pot, 2 pieces per ear. We sew all around with the good sides facing out, leaving the bottom open so we can stuff in wire (that is u-shaped like the ear), or pipe cleaner which gives the ears structure and allows you to shape them. You can also use felt, burlap ribbon or spring/Easter wired ribbon for the ears. Once the fabric ears are sewn, set them aside.
Next, it is time to paint the pot! We picked more muted, pastel colors like cream and beige, light yellow and light pink or blue. We brushed the paint in about 3 coats of paint and let dry. Then we lightly dry-brushed another color over top which gives the look of 2 colors, much like applying milk paint to create rustic looks. We also painted them in solid colors.
We painted the saucer green for the bunny and brown for the carrot, but you can paint it any color you like.
Once the paint was dry, we applied mod podge so when we water the plants, the paint does not run. It also makes wiping the candy bowl much easier!
Now it is time to turn the pot into a bunny! We attached the ears with hot glue and used embellishments to hide the ends of the ears on both sides of the pot. We painted on some cheeks and attached whiskers from burlap ribbon that we frayed apart. Lastly, paint on eyes and a nose. We let the pots dry overnight before putting in dirt and planting a spider plant. These would be great for planting herbs in as well.
For the carrot, we painted the pot a darker pumpkin-shade of orange and applied 3 coats. Once dried, we painted the eyes and mouth and streaks for the grooves of the carrot. Then we applied 1 coat of mod podge to seal before using.
Bunny Pot Craft Two – Decorative Bunny
We sewed the ears much like we did above. I made larger ears, so I sewed them good sides in and flipped them. I then put in some thin wire in through the bottom so the ears keep their shape. My daughters each opted for sewing on the outside of the ears for a rustic look. You can also cut with pinking shears or fray the edges.
First though, let’s paint!! We once again applied about 2 to 3 coats of paint, depending upon the brand of paint we used. We did not mod podge these pots, but you can apply mod podge so it is easier to dust!
We then painted on cheeks, eyes and nose. We flipped heart cut outs for the nose that we had left over from Valentines. Glue on whiskers and any embellishments you like. We also made pom poms from yarn to attach to these bunnies, but you can use jumbo pom poms or leave them out altogether.
The ears we placed through the hole that is in the bottom of the pot, through the “top” as pictured. My daughters applied hot glue from the inside of the pot so the ears would not fall out. Attach embellishments and ribbon to hide the “mess” at the base of the ears.
Yarn Pom Poms – you can make them using a pom pom maker or just with your hand! I make an easy version that I fold over and hot glue it and then fluff it out once it’s on the bunny pot! Wrap yarn around your fingers until desired thickness. Remove from fingers and tie another piece of yarn through the opening to hold them together. Cut the yarn and shape into a pom pom before gluing on. The more yarn you use, the thicker the pom pom.
And there you have it! A few easy Easter crafts to do with a terracotta pot!
You can use any size and be as creative as you like, using all sorts of materials and even some items you can find around the house or backyard! This makes a great homeschooling project too! Taking the family on a nature hike, looking for things to make the bunny out of like small twigs for the whiskers, pine cone for the tail (baking it for a few minutes will help remove any unwanted bugs!), rocks for the eyes and so on. It really is versatile and anything can be created with your imagination!
