We enjoy creating an assortment of crafting projects from a variety of materials. These chunky bunnies are made from old wood posts that once had a place in a farm fence. Now unused, we cut them in various lengths and turned them into the cutest chunky bunnies that can be displayed for Easter as well as all springtime long!
Let’s get started!
First off, decide which type of wood blocks you would like to use. You can use square posts or round posts like we did.
Since these old wood posts are rough and full of splinters, once cut, we decided to sand them smooth. Some posts we sanded the edges, and some we left as is.
We placed a cloth down so a mess could be easily cleaned up! Here are the posts we are using. We have made these a few times simply because they are so much fun to create! And we show you that you can really use anything you like for embellishments, for the facial features, and the ears can be a variety of materials and so on!
Next up, painting… or staining! You can paint as much as you would like with thick, bold colors, use stain to reveal the wood grain underneath, use milk paint or a chalk paint so you can sand off for that rustic look (and that peek-a-boo effect) and so on. That is what I love about this project — the options are endless! I decided to just paint mine.
Now that is has been painted, and a few coats applied, it can dry while I sew the ears, paint the bunny’s cheeks and curl the whiskers.
For the whiskers, I am using thin black wire, similar to florists wire because it is easy to use and easy to hot glue as well. Cut 6 whiskers. To curl them, I wrapped them around a paint brush a few times, then cut it at the length I liked and pulled it out slightly to loosen the curls.
For the ears, I am using fabric, but you can also use burlap, wired ribbon, wooden sticks — really anything you like. Leave the fabric doubled up and cut 2 ears. I cut it with regular fabric scissors but you can also use pinking shears to leave a pretty edge. Sew them around the edge, about 1/4″ in, so they do not fray apart over time although the edges may fray up to the sew line (I like that frayed, old look!) You can also sew them by hand (like with our other bunnies we made). You can also sew good side to good side and flip them afterwards (like my daughter “H” did with her green bunny ears. It is a little tricky to flip but is totally doable!).
Once the ears are sewn, slip a piece of wire inside which will give the ear shape and help you to bend and shape them. Once that has been completed, you can hot glue them onto your bunny. You can also drill a small hole where you can put them inside, but I still recommend hot gluing the ears in place.
I decided to complete the facial features. I painted wooden circles (that you can find in any craft store) white that will be my bunny’s cheeks. I then hot glued 3 whiskers to each cheek and hot glued them to my bunny. I glued a pink pom pom on the for nose, but you can also use a button, a small round wood piece, clay and so on. You can also drill a small hole and use a rustic drawer knob (which my friend did in her bunny workshop which was such a cool idea!). I painted on eyes using the end of the foam brush I was using. To do the eyes, dip the handle in black paint, dab it on a napkin lightly and then dab onto the bunny. You could also use googly eyes or paint them on any which way you would like. This is completely open ended.
Now it is time to hide the ugly top from gluing the ears! You can use wood pieces, fake flowers, fabric flowers, paper flowers, ribbon and so on. I have used a bow and some wooden hearts.
These are our completed bunnies. We have all done our own thing and they all look adorable!
These bunnies make the perfect Easter and springtime display on our fireplace mantle! So cute! It also shows everyone’s unique and personal flair!
Here is one I made earlier — one of my favorites — it has more of a rustic look to it, but nevertheless, still super cute and a beautiful crafting project to display!
We always love seeing these chunky bunnies…please share yours with us!
