In just a few short days, warm weather and wonderful rain, we have much more sprouting up in our garden. Let’s check on the garden.
We have patty pans sprouted (which are also called summer squash or scallop squash). They are tender, require no peeling and are delicious sliced and sauteed in butter and oil with salt and pepper.
Our dill was one of the first herbs to sprout. We planted 2 varieties which will yield fronds which we cook with, add to pickles and freeze to use all winter, as well as the yellow heads that are perfect for pickling with.
We planted a couple varieties of carrots. Some have sprouted beautifully and some are a bit sporadic. Depending upon the age of the seeds and whether the seeds froze or not helps to determine whether they grow or not. If we have any that have not sprouted, we will just replant them in a couple weeks!
Off to the right, you can see the green and yellow wax beans have sprouted as well.
The potatoes are growing wonderfully in this raised planter. We have planted a couple potatoes in a flower pot also which have not taken off as well as these have. We are most definitely excited for fresh garden potatoes which can be sauteed with butter, placed on the BBQ or cooked on the campfire or added to soups and stews.
Our multiplier onions are growing great and we are eagerly waiting to use them! I love adding them to salads, scrambled or fried eggs, sauteed potatoes plus so much more. The butter crunch lettuce is growing great but the other mesclun salad lettuce mix row has not come up well so we have planted other lettuces in this row. Spinach is slowly coming up as are the zucchini.
We will be updating out garden progress throughout the summer! Stay tuned for our next garden update.
