This recipe comes from a wartime leaflet that was to help home cooks better cook with their rations. This meal is a very familiar meal and one my family felt like we’ve enjoyed before — it’s a simple, hearty meal that’s easy to prepare and absolutely delicious!
Since we are making this during 1940s Days, we used half of a meat ration and vegetables were not rationed, though sometimes hard to come by during shortages. I did change the recipe up a little bit. Here’s the original recipe:

Let’s get started!
Toss ground meat in skillet. Add salt, pepper, 3 onion seasoning, dill and some chopped onion.

Then I decided to simply add the remaining onion to the meat.

Cook until meat is browned.

Add cabbage.

Cook until cabbage is tender.

Remove from pan. Add potatoes and carrots. Add a splash of water. Season with salt, pepper and dill.

Cook until potato is tender.

Once potato is tender, the meat and cabbage can get tossed back and stir. Cook about 5 more minutes.

It’s ready! Serve with salad or veggies and a piece of bread.

We had cucumber salad and toasted english muffin bread with this scramble – it was really good.

Cabbage & Mince Scramble
1/2 lb ground beef — this was enough for my family but you may need to use more.
1 small onion, diced
1/2 tsp salt
fresh cracked pepper
1/2 tsp 3 onion seasoning
1/2 tsp dried dill
2 cups cabbage, sliced
2 potatoes, sliced – about 2 cups
1 large carrot, sliced
Toss ground meat in skillet. Add salt, pepper, 3 onion seasoning, dill and some chopped onion. Cook until browned. Add cabbage. Cook until tender. Remove from pan. Add potatoes and carrots. Add a splash of water. Season with salt, pepper and dill. Cook until tender. Once potato is tender, the meat and cabbage can get tossed back and stir. Cook about 5 more minutes. Serve with your favorite vegetables.
