Not only do we have vegetables growing in our garden plots in the community garden, but we also have vegetables in flower pots in our backyard that my kids love to tend to! We are growing lettuce, cauliflower and potatoes in larger flower pots along with peas, beans and green onions in smaller flower pots.
This is an excellent way to be able to grow vegetables in a small backyard or deck space — perfect for a city garden! A lot can actually grow in a container garden as can be seen with our lettuce!
We have the lettuce in the part of the yard where it gets both sun and shade and we water it daily when its hot because there is nothing worse than bitter tasting lettuce!
We enjoy eating lettuce everyday as wraps or salads and is especially refreshing on a hot summer day because of lettuce’s high water content! Since we have so much green leaf lettuce growing in this flower pot, I decided to thin it out a bit by pulling the entire plant. I twist off the roots and place it in my colander to rinse off under cool water.
The spinach from our garden plot is huge and works perfect for wraps!
The parsley is now ready to use in soups, salads and simply munching on. My gramma always told me how parsley was so good for freshening breath and easing stomach aches! She always had dried dill and parsley on hand to use in roasted meats and soups. Our parsley is full of dirt from the rain storm we had the evening before! We love all the ladybugs in our garden to help with those pesky aphids and other annoying bugs!
Though our garden is doing great, I would have liked to see better progress with the cucumbers, herbs and beets.
Here are our beets, carrots and beans.
We have replanted a few more beans in the open spots.
Potatoes are flowering and we have hilled them once again around the edge. They are growing so good – I am so pleased with them.
Potato flowers are so beautiful! We planted red potatoes which produce a purple-colored flower! Are they not so pretty?
Everything growing in this small garden plot is doing pretty good. The zucchini has overtaken where the spinach is growing which I did not consider (I actually thought the zucchini would grow over the side more).
We have so many onions and they taste great!
We pick the weeds and water the garden and with sunshine and care, the garden grows!
enjoy from Our City Homestead to yours
