We love checking on the progress of our garden. Often, in just a few days, especially after rain and some warm sunshine, our garden’s progress is really noticeable.
Our potatoes here are growing great! We made sure that the hills still have lots of dirt, and added where it needed.
Most of the onions are up. We planted multipliers so we can enjoy green onions all summer long. We planted a couple varieties of lettuce. The lettuce is starting to grow as is the spinach. The zucchini are beginning to grow as well. We make sure if it does not rain, to water it every few days. Lettuce especially will become bitter if water is lacking. Once squash plants become larger, you will be able to smell the bitterness of its lacking in water. If you notice white salt deposits on the soil, it has been over watered and may kill the plant. The key is to water but not over water. If you are not sure if you should water, the best way to check is to dig down in the dirt a little bit — if it is dry, then it’s time to water.
It has been quite warm lately and we have not had much rain, so we decided to water the garden after picking all those annoying weeds! We also find that picking weeds every few days helps keep them under control — then the garden does not become overtaken by weeds which then takes nutrients from the soil away from our growing veggies and herbs!!
How about the rest of the garden? The beans are up and the carrots and beets are starting to grow as well as some squash and dill.
We are enjoying our first year at our community garden! We always plant in planters around our yard, but a larger garden is great! Everyone’s gardens are starting to sprout and grow and others are just planting so it is not too late to start a garden!! Do you not just love gardening?
