Malted Waffles date back to the early 1900’s when bakers were adding malt powder to waffle batter to experiment with flavors. Malt powder gives the waffle are darker color and distinct flavor, much different than regular waffles.
Malt powder is a mixture of both barley and wheat flour along with milk powder which gives a rich, toasted nutty flavor due to the barley. Malt powder is created by first germinating the grains, letting them dry and then grinding them into a powder, giving it a unique taste. Malt powder became popular in the 1920’s when it was added to milkshakes.
I don’t have true malt powder, but instead I am using a chocolate malt powder that both works great and tastes great! Its one of our favorites and is a delicious way to spruce up breakfast!

Combine milk, eggs, oil or melted butter, vanilla and sugar.

Whisk well.

Add malt powder.

Whisk well.

Add flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder.

Stir until combined. Heat waffle iron.

Batter should be thick.

Spoon batter onto hot waffle iron. Cook according to your waffle iron.

Remove carefully and continue until batter is gone.

Malt Waffles
2 eggs
1-1/4 cups milk
4 tbsp oil or melted butter
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp sugar
3/4 cup malt powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
1-1/4 tsp baking powder
1-1/2 cups flour
Combine milk, eggs, oil or melted butter, vanilla and sugar. Whisk well. Add malt powder. Whisk. Add flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Stir until combined. Heat waffle iron. Spoon batter onto hot waffle iron. Cook according to your waffle iron. Remove carefully and continue until batter is gone. Serve with your favorite syrup.
