The smell of fresh bread baking wafting through the house is the best. I love making an assortment of breads and buns – everything from sweet breads and buns to braided breads to savory breads and buns and even stuffed breads like these stuffed pizza buns. These pizza buns are amazingly delicious and a meal the whole family will love!! Not only do they make a yummy meal time, but they are great for on-the-go, as a delicious snack and anytime you want something pizza-inspired!
One of the best parts of making these pizza buns is how everyone can stuff their piece of dough with their favorite toppings because everyone enjoys their food more when they have helped to prepare it (especially children and is one of the many reasons I got my children helping in the kitchen from quite young!). These stuffed pizza buns are soft and fluffy with gooey cheese and tasty toppings stuffed inside – a meal your family will request often!
This dough really is a versatile dough and is a dough that I have been using for over 20 years! These pizza buns can be easily made into a cheeseburger style stuffed bun or even taco buns (blog post coming soon!) simply by changing what you stuff the dough with. You can also stuff the dough with marshmallows and chocolate for a sweet stuffed s’mores bread or even just some shredded cheese for a cheesy bun that tastes fabulous with a bowl of chili.
Let’s get started!!
For these delicious pizza buns, I used our quick and easy pretzel recipe that works perfect for pizza crust or these delicious pizza buns and is super easy to prepare the dough! Check it out here: https://www.ourcityhomestead.com/quick-and-easy-pretzels/
Once dough is prepared, cut it into 8 pieces.
Flatten out each piece of dough.
One at a time, spoon a teaspoon of sauce onto dough. Adding more sauce tends to leak out once baking.
Add your favorite pizza toppings. We are rather simple today and we are just using ham, but you can use any meat like pepperoni, salami, chicken (which would be great with bbq sauce rather than marinara), etc., and easily add other veggies like chopped onion, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives and so on. Pineapple or tomatoes tend to make the dough wet and causes the cooked dough to have a gluey texture. Add a sprinkle of shredded cheese but not too much because otherwise it will seep out of the dough. We are using old cheddar cheese but use your favorite cheese!
Pinch the sides together. I first pinch the sides like a perogy and then pinch them again to form a bun. You can also just fold these in half and bake like a hand pie.
Once the bun is shaped like a bun, placed on a baking pan. I love using my stoneware lightly dusted with cornmeal. Be sure to pinch the buns well, otherwise the cheese and sauce may leak out! You can also omit the pizza sauce if you like.
Lightly brush with egg. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Repeat until all the dough is done. Bake at 350F for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown. The bun should also be golden underneath as well.
These buns are simply delicious and goes great with a salad. They are also perfect for school or work lunches, when on-the-go, on a road trip or for a picnic. You can prepare several extra and place them in a sealed container in the fridge and warm as needed. They can be baked and then individually wrapped and then frozen – then just thaw in the fridge and reheat to enjoy.
These pizza buns are soft and fluffy and filled with delicious toppings, making it taste just like a pizza! My family loves these pizza buns and is something we enjoy often!
