Hot Cocoa Bombs are all the rage right now and deliciously so! It combines hot chocolate mix with marshmallows in a chocolate shell which melts in warm milk to create a creamy, extra-chocolatey hot chocolate! We usually make our hot chocolate from scratch but these hot cocoa bombs are a close second!
We have made several kinds of these delectable hot cocoa bombs and have discovered the type of chocolate matters. Chocolate chips seems to melt so much quicker in your hot milk compared to decorating chocolate wafers that are used for making shaped chocolates. The thickness also matters because of course, if the chocolate is too thick, it takes so much longer to melt! Sealing the hot cocoa bombs can also be tricky. Heating up the one side to melt the chocolate to seal the bombs together can be done or fusing together with melted chocolate is the way we chose! Hot cocoa bombs can be a little time consuming but a fun activity to do with the family!
You can switch up the flavor of chocolate — semi-sweet, dark, milk or white chocolate as well as the flavor of the hot chocolate mix! You can also use regular mini marshmallows or even the fruit flavored marshmallows — the options really are endless!
The shape of the hot cocoa bomb can really be anything! We used acorns because its fall time, but really, you can use any shaped mold that is large enough to pour in hot chocolate mix and marshmallows! The shape can really change it up! You can also drizzle the finished hot cocoa bomb with chocolate and sprinkles or leave as is like we did.
Milk. Any milk of your choice can be used with the hot cocoa bombs! We tasted several milks and they all tasted delicious! Ultimately, we opted for coconut milk which adds a delicious, sweet flavor but you can also use regular milk, almond milk, soy or rice milk, and even chocolate milk for an extra decadent hot cocoa!
Let’s get started!
To start, melt chocolate of your choice. We used semi-sweet chocolate chips and melted them for about 1 minute and stirred until completely melted.
Then brush it up the sides of the mold – not too thick but not too thin either! Too thick and it’ll be hard to melt and pop open to reveal the goodness inside and too thin will leave holes and create quite the mess!!
Let set. We placed them in the freezer to set quickly. Remove from the molds carefully.
Now, it’s time to create the hot cocoa bombs! Once the chocolate is removed from the mold it’s time to fill. Fill one half with hot chocolate mix of your choice and marshmallows.
Next, seal it up! Either warm the edge of the empty half on a hot pan or plate or put melted chocolate on the edge. We used the melted chocolate leftover from making the molds – place chocolate on the edge and place the two halves together.
Put the sides together to form the cocoa bomb. How fun!!
Once you are ready to enjoy, place the hot cocoa bomb in your cup.
Pour hot milk over top. Watch it melt and pop open! It is so much fun for kids and adults alike! Give it a good stir and enjoy!!
This is perfect for a cool fall day or a cold winter’s evening! And these can easily be created, set in a festive muffin liner and stuffed into a bag and tied with pretty ribbon for a stocking-stuffer, teacher gift or these make a wonderfully simple gift for anyone on your list!
Does this not look absolutely delicious!?!
