It’s Day Two of our At Home Sewing Retreat! Day One went great and we actually accomplished a lot! Yesterday we made a square in a square exploding quilt block and my daughter finished her lap blanket quilt top and my other daughter worked on an assortment of blocks. Today we will be working on another block. I’m hoping to get to my project today which is a quilt top from a kit I purchased.
I’m looking forward to another sewing day!
Let’s get started!
Here’s our quote for today!

I have topped up the goodies and we have a lovely fruit tray as well.

I’m enjoying a salted caramel mocha latte while we have day 2 of our mini at-home sewing retreat. It’s so good!

While we cut our fabric for today’s block and figure out how we’d like to arrange the patterns and colors, I am enjoying a delicious hot beverage! I like seeing how everyone’s blocks are so different!

Here’s our sewing setup for our retreat. We are sewing at the table, we have an ironing station and two cutting stations.

Today we are working on the Disappearing 9 Patch which is my block that I chose for us to do.
It is a lot of fun because you can arrange the squares any way you like and you will get a bit of a different look each time. This makes a very large block!
Disappearing 9 Patch Block
We are starting out with 4” x 4” squares.

I’m sewing each row together to start with and pressing the seems open.

Here’s the rows sewn together, and then I’ll sew the top row to the middle and the bottom to the middle, aligning the seams up and pinning it before sewing.

Here’s the block all sewn together. Now it’s time for some sewing magic! My seems are not completely perfect, but they’re not too bad. It’s much better than what they usually are!

We are going to cut it exactly in half.

And then in half the other direction.

So now, we should have 4 pieces or 4 blocks from the one large one.

Arrange the block like this — the mini block in the centre will be at an angle from the other, and the opposite direction is the larger squares in the centre. You capsule also leave them as smaller blocks.
Next, sew these blocks together. I flip the top right over the top left and sew, then the same with the bottom. Then I sew them in the middle.

Here’s the completed block. I stuck with the same color scheme and fabrics as yesterday.

My daughter ‘H’ stayed with the same fabrics as yesterday with spring time fabrics in blues, pinks and greens while my daughter ‘L’ did a mish-mash of dog themed fabrics.
Here are my daughters’ blocks.

Our Projects:
Today I finally had a chance to work on my project! It was a kit I purchased a few years ago with Canadian themed fabric. The kit included the Cherrydale pattern.
I need to sew 13 sets of 3 strips that are 2-1/2″ wide to start with – I’m just on my 4th set!! But it did take me a bit to put the fabric the way I wanted it. Then I’ll need to sub-cut and sew with staggered 6-1/2″ squares.

I arranged the fabric as I liked, sew the top to the middle and then the bottom to the middle.

By the end of our sewing day, I completed sewing my 13 sets of 3 x 2-1/2″ strips. That was a lot! Tomorrow I will sub-cut then I’ll be ready to sew the pattern.

And that’s Day Two of our sewing retreat. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and seeing how far I get on my quilt top!
