When I was a kid, my dad told my mom about these bacon cheese buns he ate at the cafeteria at work. He said how delicious they were and told my mom what all was in them. She recreated the recipe using her own bread dough and rolling them out cinnamon bun style, but instead of using sugar, cinnamon and raisins, she used shredded cheese and crumbled, cooked bacon. They were delicious and my dad said they tasted just like he had at work.
I have made these for years, using different bread doughs. Today I am sharing these yummy bacon cheese buns using the Quick and Easy Buns recipe from back in January. You can find that recipe along with step-by-step instructions here, but I will of course share the recipe again!
These yummy bacon cheese buns are quick and easy and you’ll have buns ready for any meal in less than 2 hours! Let’s get started!
Once the dough has been made, it has been proofed for 20 minutes and punched down, turn it onto a lightly floured counter and roll the dough out. Spread melted butter over top. I never measure, I just spread the butter until it is enough to lightly cover the dough.
Sprinkle with shredded cheese.
Add cooked, crumbled bacon. Today I am taking the quick and easy route by using store bought bacon crumbles since I do not have regular bacon on hand.
Roll jelly roll style (or as you would for cinnamon buns), pinch edges. Cut into 10 to 12 buns.
Place buns in greased baking pan. Let rise 30 minutes. Brush any excess flour off. I forgot to do so!
Here are the buns after proofing. They look yummy already!
Bake at 350F for 30 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown. You can brush the tops with a little melted butter if you like. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I do not. The butter helps keep the buns soft and makes them a little glossy.
We always slice the buns in half and spread with butter. They are delectable! They make great sandwiches too!
These are one of my favorite bun recipes! The bacon and cheese is oh so scrumptious but tastes just as good with cheese only, which we make often, especially since bacon can be a little expensive here in Alberta! They are light and fluffy, cheesy and smoky from the bacon — super yummy and perfect with any soup or meal or even as a snack!
Quick and Easy Bacon Cheese Buns
1-1/2 cups warm water
1 tsp sugar
1-1/2 tbsp instant yeast
3 cups flour
1/3 cup oil
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg
Filling:
about 3 tbsp melted butter
1-1/2 cups shredded cheese – I often just put enough to cover the dough, but not too much
1 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled or 2/3 cup store bought bacon crumbles
Combine water, sugar and yeast together. Stir. Let sit 5 minutes. Add oil, 2 cups flour and salt. Stir well. Add remaining flour slowly to form a dough. Oil hands, knead gently. Let rest 15 to 20 minutes. Shred cheese and cook and crumble bacon. Oil 9×13″ pan. Roll dough out. Spread with melted butter. Sprinkle with cheese and crumbled bacon. Cut dough into 10 to 12 pieces. Place in pan. Let rise 30 minutes. Bake at 350F for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden. Let cool a bit before removing from pan and placing on cooling rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
