This apple crisp has a crunchy oatmeal topping with caramelized apples, a hint of cinnamon and a touch of sweetness. This crisp is not overly sweet so you can taste the natural sweetness of the apples.
I love all things apples! We enjoy them cooked in a variety of ways like this yummy apple crisp. It is great made with either fresh apples or cooked apples and of course is delicious with ice cream.
Let’s get to it!
I had all these apples to use up from making homemade apple cider. Once the cider (which is more of a spiced homemade juice) was ready, I strained the apples and placed them in the fridge.
I knew I had to make something delicious with the leftover apples. I didn’t want to waste them. It was a toss up between blending the apples for applesauce or making apple crisp. We all agreed on apple crisp!
I took the apples out of the fridge. I drained the extra juice into a bowl from the apples and added cornstarch, brown sugar and cinnamon. I removed the skin from the apples and added them back in and stirred. Then I dumped the apple mixture into a casserole dish.
I made the crumble for on top by combining flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, baking soda and cinnamon. Mix well.
Add butter. Use a pastry blender or fork to cut the butter into the mixture. You can use your hands too of course. I always use a fork.
The butter has been crumbled in. It doesn’t have to be perfect as long as it’s crumbled into most of the flour.
Dump onto apples.
Bake at 350F for 30 minutes, then 360F for 10 minutes. It smells so good!
Serve while warm. It’s amazing as is…
…but of course it’s better with ice cream!
